The academic performance of all students is reviewed at the end of the fall and spring semesters. In order to be considered in good academic standing, a student’s term and cumulative GPA is at or above a 2.0 (1.8 for first year students).
Those students whose term and/or semester GPA is below a 2.0 (1.8 for first year students) will be placed on academic warning or academic probation for the next semester of enrollment. Students placed on academic warning or academic probation are required to meet with their Class Dean for guidance on developing a remediation plan. The remediation plan is intended to assist students in charting their course back to good academic standing within one semester.
Students who are currently on academic warning or academic probation statuses and do not achieve a term GPA above a 2.0 will be Required to Withdraw from the College for at least one semester. Students may appeal this decision if they believe there were extenuating circumstances that impeded their ability to achieve academic success. Students should use the Appeal Form and ensure that the appeal addresses the specific reasons for academic underperformance and discuss how these circumstances will be alleviated if the student is permitted to continue their studies without interruption.
Students who have been granted reinstatement after a Required Withdrawal, and do not achieve a term or cumulative GPA above a 2.0 will be subject to Academic Dismissal. Academic Dismissal is a permanent separation from the College in which the student is ineligible to apply for reinstatement. Students are afforded the opportunity to appeal an Academic Dismissal if they would like to share any extenuating circumstances that impacted their ability to be successful. It is important that this appeal also put forth a comprehensive plan to address deficiencies and eventually graduate from Lafayette College.
