Personal Statement
To me, the “Lafayette Ideal” is a student who makes the most of all the resources at Lafayette while making space for others to do the same. As a first-generation student, I had no idea what to expect coming into Lafayette. Without any guidance or experience from my parents to fall back on, I was nervous to put myself out there. However, people in my community such as my first-year RA and upperclassmen in Posse, encouraged me to take advantage of the endless opportunities Lafayette had for education, travel, and art. With their motivation, I decided to challenge myself. I made it my mission to go for opportunities and put myself in spaces where I felt I wouldn’t fit in. Because I pushed myself to take advantage of these opportunities, I’ve achieved more than I could ever imagine. I’ve represented Lafayette abroad in Canada and Madagascar, have performed in a fully student-led musical performance in the William’s Art Center, have won awards such as the Paul Tully Memorial Prize, and made history as the first woman of color to direct a show in the Theater Department. Aside from all of these accolades, my biggest accomplishments are the relationships I’ve fostered here at Lafayette and, more importantly, the people I’ve been able to encourage to take advantage of all Lafayette has to offer. I’ve always believed that a good leader creates other leaders. Because of this, I’ve taken roles with high visibility such as a Resident Advisor (RA), Writing Associate (WA), Kaleidoscope Peer Educator, and Chair of McKelvy Recruitment, because it puts me in a position to not only show the people around me what is possible but, also encourage them to push themselves out of their comfort zone.
